COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) was called to 12th street just after midnight Tuesday after a detached garage caught on fire.

The fire occurred behind The Beauty Room Salon, at 823 12th Street. Firefighters arrived on the scene and found the flames from the garage had extended to two privacy fences near the building. The heat from the fire had caused vinyl siding damage to an adjacent property.

Crews deployed hose lines to the rear of the property and began an attack from the exterior of the building. Water streams were directed at the garage and on the nearby business to prevent the spread of the fire. Due to signs of structural instability, firefighters did not enter the building.

The blaze consumed a significant amount of the structure of the building, which led to the collapse of the walls and roof. The property owner told firefighters that the garage was used for storage.

The cause is under investigation. Damages are estimated at approximately $30,000 and the garage is considered a total loss. No injuries were reported.
